With James Mackay, Managing Director
In this short film, James explains how we help owners plan beyond the business.
How we help in Bath.

Building wealth outside the business
We work out how much you need personally, then the most tax-efficient way to get it there. We help you:
- Choose the right mix of salary, dividends and pension
- Use company pension payments, which save corporation tax and National Insurance
- Decide what to do with spare cash in the company
- Know what a sale needs to clear, after tax
Meet Paula and Andrew
Client story · Business owners
Paula and Andrew have worked with us since the early days of their business.
In this short film they talk about building wealth alongside the company, and the confidence that ongoing advice gives them.
How we work
1. Getting to know you
Before we give any advice, we get to know you. We ask what matters to you and how you feel about risk.
We also run a financial health check. It shows what is working well and where there is room to improve.
2. Creating your plan
Next we build your plan. Clear charts show where you stand today and where each choice could take you.
Every step is shaped around your goals, so you can see how today’s decisions affect your future.
3. Putting your plan into action
Once you agree the plan, we put it in place. That might mean combining pensions, setting up investments or updating insurance.
We handle the paperwork and keep you informed at every stage.
4. Keeping you on track
Life changes, so your plan changes too. We review it with you regularly.
When your circumstances or the rules change, we adjust the plan so it keeps doing its job.

A company, a retirement, or a big salary?
I run a company. What is the most tax-efficient way to take money out?
It depends on how much you need personally. For money you do not need this year, a company pension payment often wins. It cuts corporation tax and carries no National Insurance.
When can I afford to retire?
It depends on what you will spend, and what your pensions, savings and State Pension can pay. We map it out year by year, so you can see the date that works.
I earn over £100,000. Why is my tax so high?
Between £100,000 and £125,140 your personal allowance is withdrawn. That taxes part of your income at 60%. Pension contributions can bring your income back below £100,000.
Independent financial planning, trusted since 2019.

Questions Bath clients ask
Do I have to come to Bristol, or do you come to Bath?
No. Our office is at Square Works, 17-18 Berkeley Square, Bristol, about 25 minutes from Bath. Over 95% of our meetings happen by video, which most clients find easier to fit around work and family. You are welcome at our Bristol office whenever you would rather meet in person.
Which areas around Bath do you cover?
Bath and the villages around it, including Bathampton, Batheaston, Combe Down, Saltford, Keynsham, Bradford-on-Avon, Corsham and Midsomer Norton. We also advise owner-managers across the UK.
What does financial advice cost?
The first meeting is free, and there is no initial fee or set-up charge. After that we charge one ongoing fee, based on the investments we look after for you. You can see the full fee schedule, and how it compares with a typical adviser.
I do not run a business. Can you still help?
Yes. We also advise professionals on high incomes and people planning their retirement. The first meeting is free, and the plan is built around your own situation.
Does selling my business change my inheritance tax?
Often, yes. While you own a trading business, it may qualify for Business Relief. Once you sell, the money becomes cash in your estate with no relief at all. That is why we plan what happens to the money before the sale completes.
When should I start planning a sale?
At least two years before. Business Asset Disposal Relief cuts the tax on your gain to 18%, on up to £1 million in your lifetime. You must meet its conditions for two years before you sell.
Does the Business Relief cap affect me?
It might. Business Relief lets business assets pass on free of inheritance tax. Since April 2026, full relief stops at £2.5 million. A £3 million business could now face about £100,000 of tax.
Do you work with my accountant?
Yes. Your accountant looks after the company. We look after you, your pension and your family’s plan, and we make sure the two agree.
Are you independent?
Yes. Frazer James Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. We advise on the whole of the market. We are not owned by a provider and we take no commission on investments.
What happens after the first meeting?
If we both want to go ahead, we gather the detail on what you hold. We then build your plan and talk it through with you. Nothing is put in place until you have seen it and agreed to it.
How do I check an adviser is genuine?
Search the Financial Services Register on the FCA website. It shows whether a firm is authorised and what it can advise on. It is worth doing for any firm you speak to, including us.

TALK TO US ABOUT YOUR PLANS
The first meeting is free and there is no obligation. Tell us what you are planning and we will show you where you stand.
